The PlayStation 5 is Sony Interactive Entertainment's ninth-generation home console, introduced in late 2020 as the successor to the PlayStation 4. It pairs a custom AMD system-on-chip with a fast internal SSD and the DualSense controller, whose haptics and adaptive triggers became the machine's signature. Collectors chase early chassis revisions, region bundles, and short-run DualSense colors that disappeared soon after launch.
Sony built the PlayStation 5 around a custom AMD design: eight Zen 2 CPU cores and an RDNA 2 graphics engine with hardware ray tracing and 4K output. A dedicated NVMe SSD cut load times dramatically versus the previous generation's spinning drives. The DualSense wireless controller added precise haptic motors and resistance in the triggers, turning recoil, tension, and terrain into physical feedback. At launch Sony sold a Ultra HD Blu-ray model and a digital-only twin. A slimmer shell followed later, then a higher-spec Pro revision.
The console opened with a small but vivid first-party wave, notably a rebuilt Demon's Souls and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Later Sony releases such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarök, and Gran Turismo 7 were built to show off the SSD and DualSense. Compatibility with most PlayStation 4 games instantly widened the catalog. Third-party support thickened as the generation aged, with subscription and cloud services layered on top of the disc and download store.
Fast loading and the DualSense's tactile language became the generation's most imitated ideas. Hardware collectors now focus on first-run boards, retailer bundles, and limited controller palettes, plus special-edition consoles tied to major Sony titles. Once slimmer and Pro models replaced the original silhouette, complete early systems gained extra weight among people who document living-room hardware rather than only boxed games.
