The Fire Orange Controller is a limited-edition, translucent-orange gamepad released for the original PlayStation in 1998. Collectors prize it for its vivid colorway, short production run, and the way it captures the late-nineties shift toward eye-catching peripherals.
Molded in a single, saturated orange shell with smoke-gray buttons and matching orange cable, the pad uses the same dual-shock layout as the standard controller but adds a glossy finish that resists fingerprints. Internally it is electrically identical to SCPH-1080, ensuring full compatibility with every PlayStation title.
No games were locked to the Fire Orange edition; it simply replaced the stock gray controller in select console bundles sold through Japanese retailers. Its novelty therefore lies in the hardware itself rather than any exclusive software.
Today the controller is remembered as one of Sony’s earliest forays into chromatic special editions, foreshadowing the explosion of colorful variants that followed with the PlayStation 2. Low survival rates due to plastic yellowing keep mint examples scarce.
