The Atomic Purple Controller is a translucent violet Nintendo 64 pad that reveals its internal circuitry through a clear shell. Collectors prize it for its striking color, limited availability, and the way it embodies the late-1990s trend of see-through electronics.
The controller uses the standard N64 button layout—analog stick, D-pad, four face buttons, two shoulder triggers, and Start—while the transparent casing exposes the circuit board and wiring. Its vivid purple tint was achieved by tinting the polycarbonate shell rather than painting it, giving the plastic a consistent hue that resists chipping.
Any N64 title is compatible, yet the controller’s eye-catching appearance made it a favorite for display alongside limited-edition cartridges and special-edition consoles. Its see-through design also inspired later transparent variants for the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance.
Today the Atomic Purple Controller is regarded as an early example of Nintendo’s willingness to experiment with color and transparency, foreshadowing the bold palettes of the GameCube and Nintendo DS lines.
