Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is Nintendo’s 2003 GameCube kart racer and the only mainline Mario Kart built around two riders sharing a single vehicle. A passenger throws items while the driver steers—a split the series never restored in the same form. Complete GameCube copies remain a collector staple because the game is exclusive to that hardware and still defines the system’s living-room multiplayer reputation.
Each kart seats a driver and a passenger. The driver steers, boosts, and drifts; the passenger deploys items, including special weapons tied to characters or pairs—eggs, Bowser shells, Mario-and-Luigi fireballs, and others. Seats can be swapped mid-race. Sixteen Grand Prix tracks fill four cups, with separate battle arenas for modes such as Shine Thief and Bob-omb Blast. Four players share one console; two to four linked GameCubes can field up to sixteen racers. Grand Prix, versus, time trial, and battle round out the modes.
Nintendo EAD built Double Dash!! as a GameCube exclusive and the fourth Mario Kart. The two-rider kart was the central design choice: it let every racer carry a signature item and split driving from offense. The game launched in Japan, North America, and Europe in November 2003. Nintendo later issued Player’s Choice budget reprints in some regions.
Reviews were broadly favorable, citing four-player chaos, the dual-rider setup, and character specials. Frequent knocks were a short single-player ladder and aggressive catch-up rubber-banding. The title became one of the GameCube’s signature party discs. Collectors still seek clean cases, manuals, and Player’s Choice variants; later Mario Kart games kept special items in altered form but dropped a full-time passenger.
